There are few things more selfless than risking personal sacrifice and helping those in need. When a perilous situation emerges, the mutual aid of heroes wearing the badge and good Samaritans can turn tragedy into triumph.

Just after 8:30 on a Friday morning, a driver suffered a sudden medical emergency behind the wheel. They lost control and the car veered off the roadway and slammed into a wooded area. Within moments, the engine compartment was engulfed in flames — and inside, still strapped into a car seat, was a small child.

A man who witnessed the crash didn’t wait for backup. He ran straight for the burning wreck and reached through the shattered rear window, working to free the child before the fire could spread. When the first Beaumont police officer arrived, he saw exactly what was needed: he handed the Good Samaritan a knife to cut the child loose. 

Together, the police officer and the good samaritan pulled the child through the broken window, escaping the flames.

There was no time to catch a breath. The officer turned back to the vehicle, broke the driver’s side window, and got the driver out as well. Beaumont Fire-Rescue arrived moments later to battle the fire. Both the child and the driver were taken to the hospital, escaping serious harm thanks to the fast action of their heroes..

Beaumont Police are now publicly recognizing the man who ran toward the danger before anyone asked him to, alongside the officer whose training and quick thinking turned one civilian’s courage into a rescue.

Heroism often wears a badge. But sometimes, the selfless efforts of citizen heroes and valiant officers are what is necessary to protect people during a scary and potentially perilous situation. As they say, teamwork makes the dream work. That is the true spirit of public service.
