Very Good Boy: Gastonia PD’s K-9 Bo finds missing child

In February 2026, North Carolina experienced a winter storm that blanketed the region in snow and ice, creating dangerous conditions for anyone caught outside. As temperatures dropped and visibility worsened, a call came in that raised immediate concern — a missing teenager with special needs had wandered away from home.

Search efforts began quickly, but the weather made every step more difficult. Whirling winds, unforgiving terrain, and relentless cold compounded as the pressure on the officers, and the risk to the teen’s life, grew more severe.

That’s when K-9 Bo was called in.

Working alongside his handler and officers from the Gastonia Police Department, Bo began tracking through the snow-covered landscape — focused, determined, and undeterred by the elements. While others searched, Bo followed a trail no one else could see.

Through freezing temperatures and challenging terrain on his bare paws, Bo pressed forward until he located the missing teen, who had become disoriented in the storm. Cold, vulnerable, and alone, the teen was in urgent need of help.

Because of Bo’s persistence and training, and his impeccable nose, the help the child needed arrived just in time. The boy was safely recovered and reunited with family — a result that, just hours earlier, was far from certain.

The commitment to service expressed by law enforcement in this instance, and many others, prevailed against the harsh elements. Service dogs are a critical part of law enforcement capacity, bringing capabilities that extend far beyond what humans can do alone. As Police Week kicks off, we honor man’s best friend and their service to our communities. Having them work alongside our law enforcement helps keep us all safe.
