Valor Voices: Tyler Shelby

Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Trent Shelby delivers baby on side of the highway

Public service oftentimes requires responding to unknown and unusual circumstances. That is exactly what awaited Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Tyler Shelby when he responded to a call for an ambulance on the side of a highway on November 22nd, 2025.

Trooper Shelby arrived to find a car pulled over on the shoulder, with the passenger door open and a soon-to-be new mother in the passenger seat, giving birth as he arrived.

According to reports, he said “don’t push,” but the baby was already on its way. After the incident, Trooper Shelby humbly recounted “All I did was play catch.”

According to Oklahoma Highway Patrol officials, “The ambulance arrived shortly after, and the mother and newborn were transported to the hospital to continue care where Trooper Shelby left off. Trooper Shelby then went right back to work, ready for the next call. We’re happy to report that both mother and baby are doing great!”

Law enforcement officials are members of our community, but unlike everyone else,  their oath and duty to protect and to serve eclipses more than keeping the bad guys off the streets. Sometimes, as in the case of Trooper Tyler Shelby, they are needed to help bring new life into their communities. Thank you for your service, and congratulations to a new family!
