Most of us spent our Christmas Day in warm living rooms, sipping coffee and listening to the sounds of happy children and loved ones as they unwrapped gifts. But there is a reason we could enjoy that moment. While we sat cozy in our homes, there were officers in the cold, patrolling the streets, to ensure our family’s safety during this special season. The hard and necessary work of keeping all of us safe must be done.
On a chilly New York afternoon, a potential tragedy was averted by heroic law enforcement officers doing just that – their duty.
On Christmas Day 2025, Highway Sergeant Michael Santillo, alongside Officers James Rizzo and Andrew Tirelli, was summoned to a half-frozen pond on Long Island. Stranded chest-deep in the icy water was 8-year-old Tayvion, freezing and unable to free himself.
The trio of officers leapt into action. According to Suffolk County Police, Rizzo and Tirelli “entered the pond and attempted to throw a life ring to the child while… Santillo crossed the ice to reach the child and pull him from the water.” And thankfully, they were successful. Tayvion was treated at the local hospital, but got to spend the night of Christmas back home with his family.
The dedication of our law enforcement officers is truly admirable. Their willingness to put their lives on the line, diving headlong into freezing waters, to save a kid and a member of their community, demands our support. Because of these officers’ courage, a family was together and intact on Christmas Day.
“That’s just the personality that police officers have. You don’t think, you act. You go in and do the rescue. You go in the burning building… you get in the water and try to help people,” Sergeant Santillo said. For saving the life of young Tayvion, and for your service to your community, thank you.
